history:
His parents, Louis and Helene, are the owners and operators of a large plant and flower nursery in Sansonnet, the biggest in the area. They were renowned for their own breed of white-and-yellow irises, called Petite Éclaircie, which is French for “little sunburst.” Ever since he was a child, Remy had been recruited, along with his brother and sisters, to work in the nursery every summer.
Living on a farm on the edge of the bayou isolated the Thibodeaux family from the general population of the town of Sansonnet, so for the most part, all they really had were each other. This caused the children to be extremely close to one another, best friends.
Remy got into photography thanks to his older sister Margot, who was also a photographer. The two were the closest of the children. Margot would take Remy out into the bayous with her to get pictures of the gators and herons and nutrias, all of the Louisiana wildlife. He was so enthralled by the process that she taught him nearly everything he knows about photography. The two of them built their own dark room on their family’s property and they would spend hours together there. Remy was devastated when Margot was accepted into the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and fell in love with the Big Apple when his parents permitted him to visit her for a week during the summer when he was thirteen.
While Margot was away, Remy continued his own work in photography, and he was often spotted out and about in Sansonnet, armed with his camera, taking pictures of anything and everything. He realized he could make a living out of his hobby when his aunt offered him twenty-five cents to take pictures of her garden. Soon, he started his own business, offering his photography services for five dollars. He was the top photographer for his high school yearbook committee every year. His eye for detail made him desirable, and was soon doing amateur photography jobs, like family weddings, family reunions, baptisms and confirmations.
Remy decided to not go to college – Margot had taught him everything he had needed to know about photography, and what she hasn’t taught, he had either learned himself or learned from books. He moved to New York City (just like Margot) and tried to make a living as a professional by joining a studio. When he moved there, he discovered that an independent record label, Miscommunication Records, was seeking photographers for a music tour. Remy applied, was accepted, and assigned to be the official photographer for the Midwestern teenaged band, the Shake It Ups.
His brother Dax is married; he and his wife Julia have a three-year-old daughter, named Gabrielle. His sister Margot is also married, and she and Stefan have an infant son, whom she has named after her favorite little brother – “Little Remy” is sometimes called by his middle name, Charles, by his family to distinguish him from his uncle. Remy was the official photographer for both of his siblings’ weddings, and carries his niece and nephew’s pictures in his wallet.
